The international campaign for the boycott of the UAE entitled “Modern Slavery in the UAE is the time to boycott” a series of media events to introduce Western public opinion to the real face of the UAE.
The campaign, which began on Tuesday, said the UAE had a poor human rights record, such as facilitating trafficking in human beings, modern slavery of Asian labor, war crimes in Yemen and funding of terrorist groups in a number of areas of conflict in the Middle East.
The International Campaign for the UAE (UAE) on Tuesday morning published a short film about the conditions of the workers and their difficult conditions in the country, where they do not receive their basic rights, do not receive a fair salary, no rest periods, and many workers are not allowed to take leave to visit their families.
The film pointed out that the UAE hastily tried to pass a law purporting to protect workers’ rights at the end of last September in a desperate attempt to beautify its image.
The campaign is scheduled to launch dozens of media materials written and visible to identify what is happening in the UAE on the level of rights.
British lawyers representing a number of European human rights organizations accused the UAE authorities of pursuing systematic policies of torture and ill-treatment of citizens and residents in a meeting held in parallel with the meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva last month.
The lawyers also revealed the existence of secret prisons in the UAE, in which various kinds of torture are practiced for the detainees, in addition to the authorities adopting oppressive policies that restrict the freedom of expression and the enforced disappearance of persons without trial.
In July, Front Line Defenders International monitored widespread violations of human rights in the UAE and filed a report with the United Nations.
The International Organization for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders at Risk said it had monitored arbitrary arrests, wholesale trials and harassment of the families of human rights defenders in the UAE.
The UAE has been involved in the Saudi aggression against Yemen for more than two years.
Earlier, an Associated Press investigation revealed a secret network of Yemeni prisons run by the UAE, where detainees are subjected to various forms of torture.
According to the information provided by the Agency, these prisons were witnessing cases of brutal torture to the point of “roasting” the prisoner on fire.
A number of Pentagon officials acknowledged that Washington has been involved in interrogating detainees in these secret prisons under the supervision of Yemeni and Emirati forces and that they have permanent access to them, which may violate international law.
These prisons are located inside military bases, airports and Yemeni ports, and even in residential buildings.
The agency said it had documented at least 18 secret prisons in southern Yemen under the administration of Emiratis or Yemeni forces set up and trained by the UAE, according to reports compiled from former detainees and prisoners’ families, lawyers, jurists and Yemeni military officials.
